JACOBUS KRITZINGER
Associate | Bridge Technical Lead

Jacobus is a Senior Bridge Engineer with 10 years of experience in designing concrete structures, including bridge super- and sub-structures, major culverts and soil-retaining structures. His experience includes analysis and design of pre-and post-tensioned bridge deck members (Spine, voided slab and beam and slab decks).

He started his career at AECOM South-Africa in 2016 after completing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2015. Forming part of the Highways and Bridges Market Sector in Cape Town, South Africa. Jacobus played a critical part in delivering New Build and Rehabilitation projects for AECOM as a Bridge Engineer, responsible for design and analysis of various types of bridges and other structures.

Other experience includes project management, financial management of projects, liaising with clients, handling requests for information/approval for projects under construction, assisting with project execution planning (resource management) and assisting with the tendering process for new project opportunities. Site experience gained includes conducting reinforcement inspections, concrete inspections, and post-tensioning on-site reviews.

FILIP TOMCZAK
Senior Bridge Engineer

Filip has over 23 years’ experience in bridge engineering – including design, assessments, investigations, construction, project management, and technical coordination. His strong technical expertise is supported by practical application of design in construction and awareness of whole-of-life costing and maintenance of structures.

Filip’s expertise extends to technical rehabilitation aspects, including the durability and strengthening of bridges. He has a detailed understanding of the complex engineering principles involved in rehabilitating aging infrastructure, and he has successfully managed the rehabilitation of various bridge types. He is skilled in optioneering, independent verification, and bridge rehabilitation design.

Filip particularly enjoys the conceptual stage of the projects and finding engineering solutions that overcome buildability challenges and deliver value for money and sustainable design outcomes. Filip arrived in Australia in January 2023, and his project experience includes Australian projects as well as international projects across New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland, and Vietnam.

RYAN THYER

Ryan is a Chartered Senior Structural Engineer with 17 years of diverse experience in the engineering profession. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil & Structural) from the University of South Australia in 2008, Ryan has worked across multiple sectors, including commercial buildings, major civil infrastructure, industrial facilities, bulk handling, and remediation projects. His comprehensive knowledge of construction processes enables him to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions tailored to client needs.

Throughout his career, Ryan has held key roles to provide feasibility studies, detailed design, construction supervision, condition assessments, remediation, and project management. His versatile expertise and commitment to excellence have consistently contributed to successful project outcomes.

JIM NAYLER
Director | Senior Civil Engineer

Jim brings 31 years’ experience in engineering management, team leadership, and project delivery. He has a proven track record of contributing to the success of major South Australian and national projects across the built environment, defence, infrastructure, and industrial sectors.

Throughout his career, Jim has held various engineering management roles, with a focus on project delivery and oversight. His responsibilities have encompassed developing and implementing market sector strategies, leading and building engineering teams, managing customer relationships at both local and national levels, and ensuring the successful execution of contracts. He has consistently met key performance metrics, including revenue, backlog, job income, and operating income.

Jim's leadership has been instrumental in delivering significant projects in South Australia, including the New Royal Adelaide Hospital PPP, Calvary Hospital, Osborne Naval Shipyard, Coopers Brewery, SA Police Headquarters, Festival Plaza Redevelopment, and RAAF Base Edinburgh.

HARRY PHO

Associate | Senior Civil Engineer

Harry has more than 10 years’ Civil Engineering experience and is an expert in stormwater design and flood analysis. He is a Senior Engineer and an Associate with the MLEI Group and is MLEI’s lead engineer on civil projects. He joined MLEI in September 2014 and has since worked on several high-profile developments.

Harry has extensive experience with high-profile developments, major urban subdivision projects, rural drainage projects, government network strategy for future planning transport network and development planning approvals. On subdivision projects, he works closely with the developers and is regularly involved in superintendency.

Harry is a natural mentor and enjoys coaching graduate engineers in his team to develop their skills. He excels at team building and has a closeknit team that communicates and works very well together to produce quality project deliverables.

CHRIS O'CALLAGHAN

Chris is the General Manager of MLEI Melbourne Pty Ltd. He is a Senior Structural Engineer with 11 years of experience managing projects and teams alike in multi-storey buildings, education, commercial, residential, retail & industrial buildings, industrial structures, water-retaining & water-related structures, and civil infrastructure projects.

Chris has led the design of numerous projects. Between 2017 and 2020, Chris led over 100m in school upgrades in South Australia on behalf of the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.

Chris’ focus is on practical, efficient construction practices, adopting a design approach which targets end user and contractor functionality.

Chris has led the project delivery of a range of commercial projects including the Rundle Mall Plaza redevelopment, Jurlique production, support and warehouse facility, Resthaven Bellevue Heights refurbishment, Topham Mall remodelling, Q-Max water pumping and treatment stations, ElectraNet Back Up Control Centre.

NEIL DAVEY

Neil brings over 30 years of consulting engineering experience, gained through his work across Australia and the United Kingdom. A highly versatile engineer, Neil combines strong design expertise with comprehensive project management skills, specialising in projects spanning sport, recreation, aquatics, and community infrastructure.

Widely recognised as an expert in the design and delivery of complex sporting facilities, Neil has built a reputation for developing high-quality, practical, and cost-effective design solutions. His strength lies in understanding and responding to client needs, earning him the trust of global clients—including FTSE 100 companies, internationally recognised brands, and prestigious education institutions such as Geelong Grammar School.

Neil’s leadership experience includes over a decade managing and developing structural engineering teams. He has delivered a diverse range of projects, including the $30M Goulburn Sport Centre Redevelopment (NSW), various commercial and educational developments, extensive aquatic and recreation facilities, and the $45M scheme design for the La Trobe University Sports Facilities Upgrades in Melbourne.

Neil was also a founding director of Crackerjack Consulting Engineers, which has since joined MLEI Consulting Engineers, continuing his commitment to engineering excellence within a collaborative team environment.

MICHELLE COLLETT

Michelle is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and currently serves as Chair of the Victorian Structural College at Engineers Australia. She is a key member of MLEI’s Victorian Leadership Team, bringing over 23 years of experience in structural design and project management across industrial and commercial sectors.

Renowned for her expertise in managing complex projects, Michelle excels in client engagement, early-stage consultation, schematic and detailed design, leading multi-disciplinary teams, and delivering value-driven solutions.

Her specialisation in industrial warehouses is backed by an impressive portfolio, including projects such as the National Tiles Warehouse, Bedford Warehouse, JBS Processing Facility, Bluescope Manufacturing Warehouse, Linfox Facility, Hunter Express, Apex Steel, and Orora Warehouse, among many others.

Michelle is highly proficient in the design of buildings using steel, concrete, timber, and masonry. In addition to her engineering credentials, she has also held the role of National Quality and Continual Improvement Manager, further showcasing her leadership and commitment to excellence.

SERHAN HALIL

Serhan is a Principal Aquatic Engineer and MLEI Associate with over 26 years of consultancy experience in Australia and the United Kingdom, specialising in civil, structural, and aquatic engineering. He specialises in civil, structural, and aquatic engineering, with a proven track record in the design and management of complex projects across commercial, public, and recreational infrastructure.

Serhan is recognised for his expertise in delivering high-quality, cost-effective solutions and for his leadership in structural audits, damage assessments, and remedial design. He has successfully led the delivery of multi-million-dollar commercial and healthcare developments, bringing deep technical insight and strong project management capabilities.

As the founder of Crackerjack Consulting Engineers – now part of MLEI – Serhan has provided specialist advisory services for major aquatic, sports, and recreational facilities nationwide. He continues to play a key role in both the technical direction and commercial strategy of projects, while actively mentoring staff in engineering excellence and leadership development.

RAZA MALIK

Raza is a Chartered Professional Engineer with 16 years of experience delivering large-scale civil and structural projects across a wide range of sectors, including industrial, water resources, property, roads, and defence. He has successfully led projects through all phases of the design lifecycle—from prefeasibility assessments and concept design to detailed design, tendering, and construction.

Raza’s diverse project portfolio spans key sectors such as infrastructure, land development, public realm, defence, commercial/industrial, and remote infrastructure development. His extensive involvement in complex projects has equipped him with a deep understanding of technical requirements and project delivery across varied environments.

Over the course of his career, Raza has cultivated strong relationships with local service authorities, councils, and government agencies, enabling effective stakeholder engagement and streamlined project coordination. His broad industry knowledge and engineering expertise are invaluable assets in driving project outcomes and navigating regulatory frameworks.

Since joining MLEI in 2019, Raza has contributed to several major projects across the Northern Territory and Victoria. He currently serves as General Manager of MLEI NT and holds the role of National Civil Business Development Manager, where he plays a key role in strategic growth and client engagement across the civil engineering sector.

ANTHONY GIANNINI
Associate | Senior Civil Engineer

Anthony brings 9 years of experience in civil and structural engineering, having contributed to a diverse range of projects across sectors such as transport, infrastructure, commercial, industrial, land division, remote infrastructure development, defence, public realm, education, and residential.

His expertise spans design, project delivery, and construction oversight, working with private developers, local and state authorities, and consulting firms.

Anthony possesses a comprehensive skill set in civil and structural design, including:

  • Road geometric design and stormwater management, including Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), drainage networks, detention, and retention systems.
  • Site development, earthworks design, and pavement design (both flexible and rigid).
  • Structural design for steel, concrete, and timber elements across various applications.

Beyond design, Anthony has hands-on construction experience, having served as a Construction Superintendent on road and land division projects for private and government clients. His ability to collaborate effectively with contractors and stakeholders is strengthened by his background as a Site Engineer, providing him with valuable practical insights into real-world construction challenges.

Anthony’s well-rounded experience ensures seamless project execution, from initial design and approvals to construction supervision and completion.

CLIVE COWDELL

Prior to this, Clive has worked in Melbourne as well as internationally London,

ALAN MICHIE

Alan is a highly experienced Bridge Engineer with 9 years of dedicated experience in bridge engineering and 16 years in the wider building and construction industry. He has valuable hands-on expertise in project tendering, project management, and occupational health and safety, as well as in fostering relationships with a wide range of clients – including government agencies, local councils, builders, developers, and homeowners.

Alan’s portfolio includes high-profile infrastructure projects in New South Wales, such as the Newcastle Inner City Bypass (Rankin Park to Jesmond), Parramatta Light Rail, and Newcastle Light Rail. In these projects, Alan played a crucial role in delivering infrastructure that meets both functional and safety standards, while adhering to strict timelines and budgets. His experience encompasses the entire project lifecycle of bridges and civil infrastructure – from assessment & rehabilitation, design & construction, through to ongoing maintenance.

With a solid foundation in both design and construction, Alan brings a holistic perspective to engineering projects. JAMES O'CONNOR

James is a highly experienced subject matter expert in Bridge Engineering, with 32 years of experience in Australia and overseas. He has a wide range of experience in government and non-government projects, including bridges, roads, rail and buildings.

James’ expertise extends to technical rehabilitation aspects, including the durability and strengthening of many bridge types, including heritage and lift bridges. He has a detailed understanding of the complex engineering principles involved in rehabilitating aging infrastructure, and he has successfully managed the rehabilitation of various bridge types.

James is exceptionally skilled in design, procurement, constructability, safety, quality aspects, contract administration, and project management related to complex bridge projects. He has successfully managed multi-disciplinary teams and ensured that projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

He is familiar with major construction procurement processes and thoroughly understands TfNSW systems and documents. He has extensive experience in the design, construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, including documentation, tendering procedures, contract administration, and surveillance of contractors.

SAMIR HANNA

Samir has more than 30 years’ engineering experience, including a vast background in the design and management of multi-storey health, commercial, residential, retail and industrial buildings, winery projects and schools.

Samir has international experience from 4 years in Saudi Arabia and 15 years in Egypt. In Saudi Arabia, he worked on the structural design management and the construction management for various multidisciplinary projects. In Egypt, he worked on the structural design and construction of concrete structures where he gained vast experience in the structural design and retrofitting for the concrete structures.

From 2008–18, Samir was the Senior and Lead Structural Engineer at FMG Engineering where he was responsible for the management for the structural design and leading the junior engineers.

Since joining MLEI in June 2018, some of Samir's most notable projects include Weilong Winery in Mildura, Victoria; a steel tower for our cement handling client's bagging plant in Yarraville, Victoria; and South Australia's first TRYP by Wyndham hotel at 266 Pulteney Street, including a seven storey office complex.

SAMUEL SCHMIDT
Associate | Steel Framing Manager

Samuel is a Senior Structural Engineer and Manager of MLEI's Steel Framing Division. With 19 years of engineering experience across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, he has developed extensive expertise in product development, anchors/fasteners, passive fire protection, and residential structural engineering sectors. 

Under Sam's leadership, MLEI’s Steel Framing division has achieved remarkable growth, expanded the revenue and team six-fold while tripling the customer base to create a highly profitable business unit. MLEI's residential Steel Framing team is now recognised nationwide as the foremost authority in Light Gauge Steel expertise through both design and product development. 

Sam has contributed his engineering talents to diverse large-scale projects including multi-story high-rises, major tunnel constructions, LNG plants, and hospital redevelopments. He possesses specialised knowledge in three distinct areas – structural anchors/fasteners, passive fire protection systems, and Light Gauge Steel (LGS) framing applications. 

SAM KOTANIDIS
Associate | Residential Manager

Sam is the Manager of the MLEI Residential Engineering Division, bringing 25 years of engineering experience in engineering across residential, commercial, industrial projects. 

Under Sam’s leadership, the division has grown into one of the largest residential engineering consultancies in South Australia. He has established strong, long-term relationships with some of the state's largest builders while expanding the client base to include developers and architects. 

The Residential Engineering Division specialises in: 

  • Structural engineering design and certifications for new homes and extensions 
  • Civil engineering for residential developments 
  • On-site wastewater design 
  • Site supervision. 

Sam’s team delivers high-volume designs for single, double, and triple-storey homes tailored to specific client sites and greenfield developments, as well as bespoke architect-designed homes.

TUAN NGUYEN
Associate | Civil Manager | Senior Civil Engineer

Tuan brings 27 years of diverse engineering experience across government, local government, and private sectors, with a proven track record in delivering multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. His expertise spans highway planning, municipal and traffic engineering, and land development, making him highly skilled in design, construction phase management, and project administration.

Since joining MLEI in 2012 as a Senior Civil Engineer, Tuan has successfully led major roadworks upgrades, pavement design, streetscapes, and civil engineering structures, along with water, stormwater, and sewer systems. His leadership has been instrumental in delivering complex projects, particularly in the mining sector, while maintaining a strong focus on quality, innovation, and efficiency.

Beyond technical expertise, Tuan excels in budget management, resource optimization, and safety oversight, ensuring projects meet the highest standards. He also plays a pivotal role in overseeing major initiatives for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), demonstrating his ability to lead high-profile projects and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders.

With a commitment to engineering excellence and innovative solutions, Tuan is a driving force behind the successful delivery of complex civil and infrastructure projects.

CRAIG GLYNN

Civil Manager
Bachelor of Engineering (Civil/Structural), The University of Adelaide (2006); Certified Practising Project Manager (CPPM), Australian Institute of Project Management.

Craig is an experienced Civil Engineer, specialising in design, project, contract and construction management of projects within the Urban Development, Water, Civil and Resources industries.

Since joining MLEI in 2018, Craig has worked on many notable projects such as the Prospect 1838 residential estate. This project's success led to further work coordinating civil and service infrastructure ad multiple stakeholders for the Kaufland Prospect store and Churchill Road junction design and streetscape upgrade, all in the same precinct. Other key projects include Parkvale Estate, Angle Vale, a 175-allotment residential estate; and the Iluka Jacinth Ambrosia Incremental Upgrade, which allowed Iluka to commence mining the Ambrosia Mineral Sands Deposit.

BEN RICE
Managing Director | Senior Structural Engineer

Ben is the Managing Director of MLEI. He has 26 years’ engineering experience in the design and project management of multi-storey health, education, commercial, residential, retail & industrial buildings, industrial structures, water-retaining & water-related structures, and civil infrastructure projects.

Ben has been leading the MLEI Group as Managing Director for 2 year – prior to that he was a vital part of the leadership team as Director for 10 years. He has Chartered Engineering and RPEQ credentials.

Ben has worked in senior roles as Project Manager and Lead Structural Engineer for various multidisciplinary projects, acting as the key point-of-contact with the client and managing project delivery. However these days, Ben mostly acts as a Project Director, but he occasionally gets hands on as Project Manager and Lead Structural Engineer for some projects.

Ben has led the design of numerous projects. From 2011–2015, Ben was joint venture Deputy Project Lead for the $1.85B New Royal Adelaide Hospital and was responsible for structural, civil and traffic engineering design and site surveillance. He spent nine months in London in 2005 working as a structural design engineer on various buildings. He spent a year on-site at the Port Adelaide Wastewater Treatment Plant supervising the construction of the new pump station as part of the Bolivar High Salinity Project. In early 2000, he worked as structural engineer in Tonga, inspecting and reporting on church buildings.

SEAN EBERT

Sean brings listed company and international experience to MLEI. He has over 25 years' executive experience in both public and private sectors across high growth companies within the engineering, technology and consumer goods sectors in Australia, US, China and Europe.

Sean is currently a Managing Director of ASX listed company AML3D, Non-Executive Director of unlisted company FCT International, as well as Non- Executive Director on a range of privately owned Australian growth companies. Sean was previously the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Beston Asset Management, Global Director M&A of Worley, CEO of Camms Pty Ltd and CEO of Profit Impact Pty Ltd.

THOMAS HA

Thomas is a Director at MLEI Consulting Engineers and a highly experienced Senior Structural Engineer with over 24 years in engineering design, management, and construction. Throughout his career, he has been instrumental in delivering complex structural solutions across various sectors, including civil infrastructure, defence, commercial, industrial, power, mining, education, and residential development. His extensive knowledge of structural systems, materials, and construction methodologies enables him to develop innovative and cost-effective designs that meet both client and regulatory requirements. With a hands-on approach, he ensures that projects are executed with precision, efficiency, and the highest standards of quality.

As a leader at MLEI, Thomas plays a critical role in project oversight, team mentorship, and strategic decision-making. JACQUES MAREE
Principal Structural Engineer

Jacques is a highly experienced registered professional structural engineer with over 20 years of experience. Throughout his career, he has been involved in a wide range of projects across civil infrastructure, commercial, residential, industrial, leisure, hotel, retail, and educational sectors. His portfolio reflects his versatility and ability to navigate complex engineering challenges across diverse industries.

Jacques has worked with major international engineering firms such as WSP and Aurecon, contributing to projects internationally, including South Africa, Swaziland, the United Arab Emirates, and the Seychelles. Greg has previously worked within Local Government in key roles on project coordination, team leadership, and hands-on design. He has contributed to Council’s capital works reconstruction and renewal programs, as well as major infrastructure projects, overseeing complex, large-scale initiatives. His expertise extends beyond design, having been involved in project scoping and technical services leadership, stepping in as Team Leader of Technical Services when required.

Greg brings extensive design and planning experience across a broad range of projects, applying appropriate standards and guidelines for State and Local Government, as well as the private sector. His work has consistently demonstrated his commitment to precision and his collaborative approach, allowing him to effectively coordinate with clients, consultants, and contractors to deliver successful outcomes.

Jeff's extensive practical experience and deep technical expertise positions him as a highly regarded professional in his field, demonstrating a level of skill and proficiency that exceeds formal qualifications.

One of Jeff's core strengths lies in his proficiency with industry-standard design software, including AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, and Revit. His experience with BIM 3D modelling has been particularly valuable in managing large-scale projects, and he has used Autodesk Revit Structure extensively from 2010 through to 2014. Michael is the Operations Manager for the MLEI Winery group trading as Linney Engineering Services. With 25 years’ of experience in industrial design within the food and beverage sector, he has spent the last two years in his current role, overseeing operations and project execution. 

Michael's career began at Beca Simons as a structural drafter before he transitioned to Linney Engineering Services in 2005 as a civil and structural design drafter, initially working as a contractor. In 2007, he officially joined the business as a Senior Designer, later advancing to Drafting Manager and Lead Designer. Following MLEI's acquisition of Linney Engineering Services, Michael moved into his current leadership role within the management team. 

With Linney Engineering Services being a leader in winery design, Michael has contributed to numerous projects across South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. His hands-on experience, including secondments to onsite roles, has given him a deep understanding of winery construction from a practical perspective. This invaluable experience has established him as a leader within the design group, driving the development of practical, cost-effective, and innovative winery facilities. 

Michael is the primary contact for many clients. He plays a crucial role in project leadership, including project management, design & planning, and site contract administration. Major projects he has worked on include the relocation of Penfolds winery production to Treasury Wine Estates' Barossa site, the development of the Weilong Winery in Red Cliffs, and McWilliams Wines’ Hanwood Site stages 1 through 7. 

BENSON SEIDEL

Benson has 25 years of experience in the design and documentation of civil works and infrastructure projects. He has a solid understanding of the requirements for civil engineering documentation specialising in, design work for local and state government including water sensitive urban design, road and subdivision design, design of road and rail networks for mining infrastructure projects, water and wastewater networks designed to SA Water standards, bulk earth works and site civil works design, and defence projects.

A proficient user of both AutoCAD and the civil modelling program 12d, Benson is also a keen communicator and seeks to liaise with clients and approving authorities to achieve the best practical outcome to satisfy the client’s needs.

Benson has recently worked on the SEA1000 Future Submarines Programme supporting the civil aspect design and building information modelling (BIM) in 12d, and has aided the civil infrastructure documentation across multiple platforms.

Ahmad has extensive experience in the design and project management in Australia (8 years) as well as internationally across in United Arab Emirates (13 years) and Syria (2 years). In Australia, Ahmad specialised in structural design and assessment for water and bridge infrastructure, local government and residential projects. In the UAE, Ahmad specialised in the structural design and construction of concrete structures where he gained vast experience in the structural design and retrofitting for the concrete structures. Ahmad was also a Quality Manager representative who implementation ISO 9001:2008 at GEO Global Engineering Consultants in Dubai. In Syria, he gained experience in local government and education projects.

Ahmad has a Bachelor of Science, Civil & Structural Engineering in 2002 from Damascus University as well as an MBA from University of Atlanta.

Ross has extensive expertise in project management, successfully leading projects from initial concept and feasibility through to approvals, construction, commissioning, and final handover. His projects often involve complex, multi-disciplinary engineering solutions encompassing civil, structural, mechanical, process, and electrical components. This project consolidated Pernod Ricard Winemakers’ Barossa Valley winemaking production capacity and included the relocation of their winery equipment from their Richmond Grove site to the Rowland Flat site. Linney Engineering Services (part of MLEI Group) provided the concept design & general arrangement, as well as detailed civil and structural design for significant foundations and footings in difficult soil conditions, structural and mechanical design of various equipment components throughout the project.

The project scope included:

  • Demolition of existing cellar building and wine storage tanks
  • Installation of new fruit receival area – including fruit staging area, trafficable suspended slab area, dual receival hoppers and crusher de-stemmers, stalk elevators and associated infrastructure.
  • Relocation of fermenter banks – including 24x 25T sweep arm fermenters and 32x 50T fermenters, which were structurally modified to accommodate modern structural standards, 4x white bag presses – relocated and installed on a cast-in-situ concrete marc bay wall structure, 3x wet marc presses – relocated and installed in a static position, including new and modified dry marc bay conveyors, and 98 wine storage & process tanks were relocated including new and modified relocated stairs and walkways.

MLEI undertook the structural engineering for this expansive 2300m² building using light gauge steel. In collaboration with True Steel Frames, we developed a light gauge steel solution using the Enduro Frame building system. This approach ensured that we maintained high quality without compromising on cost, to result in an efficient and timely construction process. This project was awarded Highly Commended in the Innovative Cold Formed Steel Buildings category at the 2024 SA Australian Steel Excellence Awards.

A significant challenge in this project was providing support for the mechanical equipment on a roof featuring 17m long trusses, all while avoiding the use of traditional structural steel. MLEI successfully addressed this challenge by employing light gauge steel framing, which delivered the necessary strength while minimising overall weight and construction complexity.

MLEI undertook cold formed steel structural engineering for the Glenelg Primary School facility upgrade, featuring 3x modular classrooms, teacher preparation rooms and breakout facilities. This project won the Innovative Cold Formed Steel Buildings Award at the 2024 SA Australian Steel Excellence Awards.

Interesting project features:

  • The curved corners of the building architecture added visual interest while softening the overall form of the structure.
  • The dimensional accuracy of the light-gauge steel framing allowed the curved architectural elements to be delivered with precision.
  • Prefabricated modules were key to the success of the build program. Roof modules were constructed with 4 or 5 trusses – each truss weighing between 75–140 kg. Overall, the project used 17 tonnes of LGS framing material.

Our project scope included:

  • Preliminary Design – drawing showing 3 proposed locations of the bus stops
  • Detailed Design – of the DIT agreed locations of the bus stops, design report, traffic impact statement, final documentation.

MLEI collaborated with DIT to provide designs suited to the constraints of each site, such as minimising services disruptions, avoiding property boundary disturbance, and achieving adequate grading to meet DDA compliance.

MLEI undertook a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) for a proposed transport terminal warehouse distribution development located at 32 Dawson Street, East Arm NT, accessed from Berrimah Road via O’Sullivan Circuit and Export Drive.

The 1461m2 single-storey transport terminal warehouse was estimated to be storing and handling up to 150x 6.1m shipping containers, operating 5 days a week from 7am-4pm, receiving & dispatching goods/household furniture in ship containers & pallets. It was deemed to be a major development with a moderate impact.

The assessment included:

  • Existing area conditions – road network, industrial land uses, site accessibility, traffic volumes & traffic mix
  • Projected traffic – estimated peak period and daily traffic during the construction and operational phases
  • Transportation analysis – road network capacity, level of service impacts, level of public transport, parking, site circulation swept path analysis for access & egress, and transportation safety
  • Improvement analysis
  • Findings and recommendations.

The Traffic Impact Assessment assessed traffic impacts on the adjoining road network arising from this development and recommended mitigation measures required to address those impacts together with an analysis of swept path for the largest vehicle at the proposed entry and exit points.

The Bowden Housing Estate is a 16.3ha site on the former Clipsal and Origin Gasworks sites, located 2.5km from the Adelaide CBD and bordered by the Adelaide Park Lands. The site is expected to contain 2,400 residential apartments and terrace homes, in addition to the community areas in Bowden Town Square – consisting of Bowden Park, the Plant 4 Bowden retail hub, and Plant 3 community hub.

Bowden is one of the most environmentally sustainable communities in the nation, with the highest concentration of Green Star homes in Australia.

MLEI undertook the structural and civil design of 41x architecturally designed townhouses on Guild Terrace, for Centina and Maxispan. The project consisted of a combination of 2-, 3- and 4-storey townhouses. Each home included innovative spatial design to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces, with feature roof terraces on the 4-storey townhouses.

The community-driven strategic vision combines living, working, recreation, landscape and heritage, and will reconnect the wider precinct to Morphettville Racecourse. This redevelopment creates:

  • A new community plaza, linking Anzac Highway to Morphettville, available for year-round events and creating a grand entry to the racecourse
  • Supermarket, shops, hospitality outlets
  • Apartment buildings with more than 150 residences
  • 250 new townhouses
  • Expanses of landscaping, parks and walking routes to provide unique and unencumbered access to the trackside and views to the Adelaide Hills.

  • A rooftop urban farm practicing regenerative agriculture, tended by the Urban Green School

Our Residential Team undertook the structural and civil design at this site for 71x 2- and 3-storey townhouses.

MLEI ROLE

MLEI were engaged to undertake the civil design for this project to reinvigorate the existing reserve and create a modern recreation offering that appealed to families, teenagers and young adults.

The design facilitated a new skate park with amphitheatre seating, a pump track, BMX track, parkour equipment, a new play space, multi-use courts, a central plaza space, a wide lawn supported by smaller more intimate gathering spaces, and community infrastructure such as lighting, shade shelters, BBQs and power points.

Our project scope included the civil design for:

  • Footing design for minor structures.

This project won 2x 2024 awards from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture – Parks & Open Space and Shadesmart.

Thomas Foods International meat processing facility was building a new Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to process the domestic sewage from their abattoir. They had a generic design package from water & wastewater treatment systems manufacturer MAK Water that needed to be customised for the balance of plant, civil layout, slabs on ground and additional platforms.

MLEI undertook the civil works for the WWTP, that included:

MLEI provided civil and structural engineering services for this four-storey mixed-use development, featuring a ground-floor commercial office and four residential apartments above, including two penthouses with rooftop terrace gardens.

Our structural scope included the design of footing systems, incorporating pad footings and a stiffened raft system. We developed a structural steel framing system to support the upper floors, along with the roof structure and bracing systems to ensure stability against lateral wind and earthquake forces. Proprietary floor trusses were also specified as part of the design.

On the civil engineering side, MLEI was responsible for the site layout and stormwater drainage plan, ensuring effective site functionality and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Our structural scope encompassed geotechnical investigations, foundation design, and the development of earthwork platforms, piling, footings, and a slab-on-ground system. We also designed suspended floors, concrete stairs, lift shafts, cores, supporting beams and columns, and roof framing, incorporating structural provisions for service supports, openings, equipment, and tanks. Additionally, the design accounted for earthquake resistance and lateral stability.

On the civil engineering front, our team delivered stormwater management solutions and pavement design to support the site's long-term durability and compliance with regulatory standards.

MLEI, in conjunction with Ginos Engineers, were responsible for the structural and civil engineering design of this 10-storey apartment complex. The project consisted of a multi-level carpark with a single level of that as basement. The complex comprised of 2-storey townhouses and multi-storey apartments.

The multi-storey apartment building was technically challenging given the tight floor to floor of 3,030mm clearances and the requirement for 2,700mm ceilings. This was overcome using a flat plate concrete floor. The project also consisted of an existing heritage building facing Greenhill Road that has been returned to its former glory and added to with a modern office addition.

MLEI Consulting Engineers were engaged as a structural consultant for the design of the superstructure of the 14-storey August Towers apartment building located at the intersection of Hutt Street and South Terrace. An efficient and economical structural design was required to fit within the architectural constraints and the needs of the client, with a number of concept designs worked through until the design team arrived at the final outcome.

The structure utilised a variety of construction methodologies, including a reinforced concrete slab on Bondek decking, supported on steel floor beams, with a precast concrete stabilising core and walls. Consideration to construction scheduling was important given the limited site access and the mixed construction types.

MLEI were engaged by Outerspace Landscape Architects on behalf of the East Gippsland Shire Council to develop the detailed civil design and construction documentation for Main Street and associated service roads in Buchan. The project scope included kerb realignments, pedestrian reticulation, drainage review and investigation, road pavement condition assessments and upgrades, carparking upgrades/ reconfiguration and landscaping design and upgrades within the road reserve and existing medians.

This project contributes towards providing a safe and efficient rural road network while improving the public realm and accessibility for Buchan visitors and passers-by. The key challenges within this project were the 10m+ level difference from boundary to boundary, building frontages and driveways tie-ins, reconfiguration of intersection accommodating two-way entry and exit for 12.5m service trucks and compliance with a strict landscape and civil construction budget to meet council objectives.

MLEI was engaged by the City of West Torrens to rejuvenate and beautify industrial-zoned Holland Street by injecting life while protecting the gritty character unique to the precinct – by creating a plaza space at the end of the street where it met the River Torrens to promote cycle & pedestrian movement. The design team was led by JPE Studio, working collaboratively with the Council. MLEI’s role focussed on Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) with street trees, permeable pavement, and a feature rain garden, as well as a stormwater harvesting system below the plaza for reusing the stormwater for irrigation of the street trees.

Stage 2
MLEI was engaged by JPE Studio on Stage 2 of the project, to undertake road reconstruction design, kerb reconstruction, and consolidation of the roof drainage to Council’s existing stormwater drainage infrastructure.

  • Site levels and associated stormwater drainage to suit the proposed works – this incorporated Water Sensitive Urban Design, using runoff from Prospect Road to passively irrigate landscaped areas within the parklands through subsurface infiltration pipework

  • New pedestrian refuge crossing on Prospect Road.

MLEI worked collaboratively with lead consultant Tract and the City of Adelaide to resolve some challenges relating to the discharge of stormwater from the road into the parklands.

The project increased the winery’s annual production capacity by 40% – from 12,000 to 20,000 tonnes.

  • Decommissioning and refilling a series of wastewater treatment dams to make way for construction of new buildings and construction of a site emergency spill dam

Before MLEI acquired Linney Engineering Services, we worked together on the new Weilong winemaking facility. MLEI’s project scope involved the following buildings:
• Filtration Building – a large building with many areas within the building including Centrifuge, Flotation, storage, cool room. It consisted of precast load-bearing walls and structural steel roof.
• Crushing Area – a multi-level area consisted of bins, cranes, drive through deck and crushers. The lower level is 4m under the ground and contains the crushers.
• Plantroom Building – a multi-level building contained ground floor pumping rooms and large condensers above on L1.

The development incorporated an upgrade to the adjacent portion of Stebonheath Road, and the civil and stormwater design necessitated the optimisation of earthworks levels and road grades to achieve a cost-efficient design solution.

In addition, due to the slopping site, large extent of retaining walls were designed to cater for staggering allotment levels, which were tied into the built form of the townhouses.

ParkVale Estate was a 4-stage 175 allotment land development located in Angle Vale, approximately 35 km north of Adelaide CBD.
MLEI were engaged to provide civil engineering design, tender, construction superintendence and contract administration for the development. These works included:

Sovereign Estate is a 10-stage development, located within walking distance of the town centre of Tanunda. The development offers a broad choice of allotments, from smaller compact living to large family homes and everything in between.

MLEI was engaged to undertake the civil engineering design, construction superintendence and contract administration for this development. The detail design included new roads and associated works, service reticulation and connections (potable water and CWMS), stormwater drainage, a CWMS pump station, and a large detention basin (incorporating landscaping) all to the approval of governing authorities. The work also includes external drainage within Council’s local roads.

We achieved savings by undertaking geotechnical investigation to inform the masterplan, which reduced rock variations risk and expense. Masterplan cut/fill volumes undertaken considering rock in soil profile (minimise cut on project) factoring in 20% of cut volume not usable as bulk fill. Allotments were benched to minimise retaining walls, with some allotments raised above road to balance cut/fill volumes considering impact on driveway grades.

Oaklands Green was a partnership between the community sector and the State Government. The previous SA Housing Authority 16.5ha site was the largest social housing regeneration project in 20 years for South Australia. This project provided 450+ market-ready homes, unlocking critical land and housing supply for South Australians – including 15% affordably through SA Government HomeSeeker program, and 235 homes for SA Housing Authority.

GREEN STAR
The project aimed to be one of South Australia’s highest Green Star rated developments. It prioritises sustainability, using materials with minimal environmental impact, energy-efficient design and homes powered by renewable energy.

STAGES 1 3, & 4
MLEI was engaged to undertake the recycled water and potable water & sewer civil engineering for Stages 1 3, & 4. Our services included:

ADELAIDE METROPOLITAN BUS STOPS

MLEI was engaged by DPTI to undertake concept design and detailed documentation indented bus bays for a number of bus stops within the Adelaide metropolitan area. Various bus stops located on heavy trafficked state-maintained roads required upgrade to meet current DPTI bus stops standards, including correct layout for DDA compliance and indented bus bays, in order for the buses to safely stop and allow for through traffic.

MLEI collaborated with DPTI to provide designs suited to the constraints of each site, such as minimising services disruptions, avoiding property boundary disturbance and achieving adequate grading to meet DDA compliance.

LINDENOW-GLENALADALE ROAD FOOTPATH AND BUS SHELTERS

The East Gippsland Shire Council required safe pedestrian access along a busy stretch of Lindenow-Glenaladale Road and increase safety between two bus stops (primary school and recreation reserve) by providing of 2.5m wide concrete footpath and elevated boardwalk as well as the replacement and relocation of bus shelters to accommodate a bus holding lane. The footpath/boardwalk connection started from Upland Street (opposite Lindenow Primary School) to the Lindenow South Recreation Reserve.

MLEI’s project scope included:

  • Review of existing drainage and pedestrian access across the area – location and depthing of all services, feature site survey, vegetation/biodiversity assessment, drainage site investigation, road safety audit, geotechnical investigation.
  • Design – new 147m footpath, new 380m footpath and new 150 metres boardwalk, two replacement bus shelters with improved bus pull-off area, improved drainage.
  • Construction schedule for the tendering process.

LEAKES ROAD LAND DIVISION TRAFFIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT

MLEI undertook a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) for the proposed land division at Leakes Road, Tarneit. The TIA accompanied a development application for an aged care facility in the proposed land division.

The assessment included:
• Existing transport infrastructure surrounding the proposed development
• Estimated number of private vehicle trips generated by the proposed development in the morning and evening peaks
• Qualitative assessment of the impact these trips on the surrounding road network, including SIDRA analysis of a major intersection
• Identification of potential works that required to mitigate the forecast impacts
• Review of the proposed internal road network for suitability and recommendation of appropriate changes.

CBD TO PRESTON BICYCLE CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENTS

This project included the planning and detailed design of approximately 5km of bicycle corridor improvements along each of St Georges Road, Napier Street, Dynon Road and Albert Street. The scope for St Georges Road and Napier Street was to reallocate traffic lanes into dedicated cycle lanes, whilst Dynon Road implemented an offroad two-way cycle path on one side of the carriageway.

Albert Street had one of the first protected intersections in Australia, which aimed to improve separation and efficiency between cyclists, pedestrians and motorists with the use of small islands at each corner of the intersection. All of the locations included:
• Functional and detailed design of separated bicycle treatment options
• Traffic and parking analysis.

For the protected intersection site on Albert/Lansdowne Street, it included the evaluation of the treatment post completion.

WARRIGAL ROAD TRAFFIC STUDY

Warrigal Road is one of the busiest north-south roads in Melbourne’s south-east, with approximately 60 thousand vehicles per day.

The traffic study investigated the possibility of different treatment options of a 6.6 km section Warrigal Road, which included a duplication, intersection upgrades, public transport and active transport infrastructure considerations.

The project included:

The goal was to enhance safety by reducing rear-end and right-turn crashes while maintaining access to adjoining properties.

Our services included:

  1. Site Assessment: Inspected site and reviewed existing information.
  2. Concept Design: Analysed turn paths, identified geometric constraints, service clashes, and land acquisition needs. Developed and revised concept plans based on DPTI feedback.

EYRE HIGHWAY INTERSECTION UPGRADES

The Australian and South Australian governments committed $94 million (80:20) to upgrade the Eyre Highway between Port Augusta and the Western Australia border as part of the Roads of Strategic Importance program (ROSI) to improve road safety, as well as help build regional communities and create jobs. Upgrade activities included construction of new overtaking lanes, new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas, junction upgrades and safety measures such as audio tactile line marking.

MLEI was engaged by Jacobs Group Australia to work on the Planning Study (20% design). This involved working with Jacobs to develop the concept design including hydrology/drainage and utility services investigations, options development and reference design for the Eyre Highway – Koonibba Access Road intersection and Eyre Highway – Flinders Highway intersection.

MALABAM ROAD RESEAL & UPGRADE

MLEI was engaged by Roper Gulf Regional Council to prepare detailed design and construction documentation for the Ritarangu entry road and Shop Link Road. The works included formalization of carriageways, lighting upgrades, relocation of LV and HV infrastructure, stormwater assessments and upgrades, protection and relocation of water assets and the standardization of the alignment to promote safe vehicular and pedestrian conveyance.

The road upgrade was in response to existing safety concerns, non-standard road geometry, sealing of road and to improve the uncontrolled parking and pedestrian conveyance through the community amid population growth of the community. MLEI was engaged to undertake a Concept Design and Preliminary Cost Estimation. Following this, we were engaged to prepare Detailed Design and IFC documentation for the new road works including certified Cost Estimations.

We experienced project delays as a result of the community consultation, and fast-tracked particular components of the design to bring the overall project back into line – by reducing the number of concepts produced, undertaking the drainage study prior to civil design commencement, and bringing on greater resources from a design and drafting perspective. MLEI utilised our southern resources to ensure program was met. This project was delivered on time and budget.

MLEI was engaged by Light Regional Council to undertake the detailed design for the realignment (approximately 1.5km) of East Terrace between Thiele Highway and Perry Road, Kapunda. The project also included the upgrade of the Thiele Highway and East Terrace intersection. The project was undertaken with a collaborative approach with Council on achieving a cost-effective design whilst upholding the adequate high standards for road safety.

The design and documentation were successfully completed in November 2021. The construction of the road upgrade was commenced in December 2021 and was completed in May 2022

The project entailed the review of existing drainage networks, realignment of kerb and outstands, improved pedestrian access and geometric upgrades of the existing parking bays and intersections to incorporate safety upgrades.

MLEI recently completed the road design and documentation of an access road to an $85M industrial development. The design and documentation of the access road was carried out in accordance with DPTI requirements. The road design included stormwater drainage, street lighting and provision of traffic signals. There was extensive liaison with service authorities to rectify service clashing issues.

Throughout the deign process, regular meetings with DPTI took place so that requirements and approvals were met from different departments. The project was a success in achieving the set timeframes and budget set by Liebherr as well meeting the documentation standards set by DPTI.

As the Independent Internal Design Reviewer, MLEI worked closely with the principal consultant to deliver the design review in a timely fashion so that any proposed amendments could be effected within the overall design program.

Fullarton Road and Glen Osmond Road are major traffic routes and primary freight routes linking commuters, businesses, and freight to key activity centres with traffic of 58,000 vehicles per day. The intersection was experiencing heavy congestion, with competing traffic movements and network constraints leading to increased travel times and risks to safety. The upgrade improved travel times and road safety, increased intersection capacity, and enhanced network reliability.
MLEI undertook the civil engineering which included lane widths, curves, corner turn paths, pedestrian ramp, acquisition lines, impacts to properties, drainage, and constructability.

The right turn lane from Fullarton Road South to Glen Osmond Road East was introduced after commencement of the detailed design to satisfy certain stakeholder requirements. In parallel with the detailed design, MLEI undertook concept options (#5) for DIT and annotated the impacts and constraints of each prior to a preferred option being selected. The concept design skills and expertise demonstrated here is relevant for the HVSPP Intersection Upgrades project.

o Indicative locations provided with MLEI assessing if locations are feasible without impacting residential access; and

The Marion Road and Richmond Road intersection upgrade was part of the North-South Corridor: Broader Network Upgrades, supporting the River Torrens to Darlington Project. The goal was to increase city-bound traffic capacity, improve vehicle and freight access, and enhance connectivity to the Adelaide CBD and Adelaide Airport. The upgrade also aimed to improve intersection efficiency and overall capacity.

MLEI was the principal design lead for civil design and documentation. Our scope included:
• Civil engineering detailed design
• Pavement design, traffic signal design, lighting design, urban and landscape design
• Cost estimation
• Constructability assessment
• Traffic engineering
• Environment, heritage and sustainability.

Upon being awarded the contract in October 2023, the MLEI Civil Team, alongside our subcontractors, quickly commenced work, achieving 30% project completion. Among the three intersections involved in the North-South Corridor upgrades, MLEI was recognised by DIT as the best-performing and most consistent project manager. Unfortunately, due to factors beyond our control—primarily the withdrawal of Federal Government funding—the project was halted in April 2024.

The building was designed utilising predominantly steel framing with precast shear walls and lift/stair cores. A transfer floor at L1 is required to enable the building to extend the floor plate over the existing heritage listed building to the front of the site and maximise the floor area per level. The roof top garden will provide exceptional views of the surrounding parklands and west end of the Adelaide CBD.

MANTRA TONSLEY HOTEL

The hotel was fuelled by green energy – from solar panels on the roof of the Main Assembly Building and blended hydrogen gas network from Hydrogen Park in the Tonsley Innovation District.

MLEI undertook the structural and civil engineering for the new Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) Fire Station in Noarlunga, which replaced the Christie Downs Fire Station that had previously served the local community for 45 years.

This modern facility not only supported fire and emergency services but also served as a hub where local emergency agencies could train together and coordinate responses to significant emergencies in Adelaide's growing southern suburbs. Additionally, it provided a space for the community to gather, learn, and collaborate.

MLEI provided civil and structural engineering services for the Town of Walkerville’s community and library building. The building was architecturally designed to be an iconic structure in the heritage area of Walkerville.

MLEI’s design included Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) for the carpark and stormwater treatment systems to support the landscape architect’s design, which focussed on encouraging public interaction and participation, to enhance the social life of the local community.

The new building was an open structure and detailed engineering was required to keep the structural cost within budget.

MLEI undertook the structural engineering design for Zeiss’ massive new 4000m2 facility in the Tonsley MAB (formerly the Main Assembly Building Mitsubishi Motors). These premises contain 120 Zeiss staff relocated from Lonsdale, and featured the Australian sales and service centre, a prescription laboratory, R&D team for vision care.

MLEI’s project scope included:

  • Assessment of existing slab and the below-slab tunnels frame to withstand the new building loads
  • Detailed design of suspended floors over existing pits
  • Detailed design of the superstructure including all columns, beams, lateral stability, roofing members, mezzanine level and any steel framing elements.

MLEI undertook the civil and structural design of this custom-built industrial warehouse. This project required 700 tonnes of structural steel to construct this 22,000 m3 state-of-the-art facility featuring over 21,160 m3 warehouse space. As the warehouse was to be used by a steel fabricator with significant loads on the ground slab, MLEI provided guidance on the allowable loads on the slab when stacking steel members. The warehouse was designed with crane beams to support 3x no. 4.5 tonne gantry cranes in each bay.

The project included a 820m3 office space designed by our close colleagues at Ginos Consulting Engineers with heavy duty hardstand, full drive-around truck access and on-grade roller door access for undercover loading.

The project construction had to be conducted within tight parameters as the site was adjacent to Edinburgh Airport and the rear of the warehouse was under its flight path. MLEI worked closely with the project team to allow comply with the strict regulations.

MLEI was engaged by Light Regional Council to undertake the detailed design for the realignment (approximately 1.5km) of East Terrace between Thiele Highway and Perry Road, Kapunda. The project also included the upgrade of the Thiele Highway and East Terrace intersection. The project was undertaken with a collaborative approach with Council on achieving a cost-effective design whilst upholding the adequate high standards for road safety.

The design and documentation were successfully completed in November 2021. The construction of the road upgrade was commenced in December 2021 and was completed in May 2022

The new plant is capable of producing a range of specialty high performance asphalt mixes along with a standard hot mix.

MLEI also assisted the builder during the construction phase to address design changes where needed to meet latent site conditions.

MLEI undertook the civil and structural design for this new glass beneficiation plant to significantly increase the use of recycled glass in its manufactured products. The project consisted of a 3,100m2 warehouse, 280m2 2-storey office, 2 weighbridge pits, platforms and stairs around proposed equipment, footings to support entry gate/transformer/sundry items, external concrete hardstand area.

MLEI’s scope of work consisted of:

This project highlights our experience with medium duty industrial facilities that incorporate complex process equipment requirements similar to that in the manufacturing industry. This project was also delivered in a tight timeframe with staged delivery of documents to ensure the Builder started on site as soon as possible.

The facility, designed to support 120 permanent staff, features state-of-the-art sensory spaces, a gross motor skills room, consultancy and therapy rooms, life skills areas, and a rooftop conference room with an adjoining garden. The 2,000m² building, set within a 12m-wide easement, was fully fabricated to meet Autism SA's specific needs.

MLEI collaborated closely with the wider project team, including Platinum (builder), Piteo Architecture (architect), Secon (building services), and Chris Sale Consulting (quantity surveyor).

MLEI undertook the design and documentation of a new Haul Road between the under-construction new grain harbour and the grain bunker site, along with an upgrade to an existing road junction. The design included a new intersection with an existing council-maintained road, upgrade of a state-maintained junction and traversed an environmental sensitive coastal dune area, where strict requirements for the road profile and impact on the locality were required to be followed.
The project scope involved the concept planning of the road alignment and interface with existing roadways and the provision of access to adjacent properties.
MLEI collaborated with Council, DPTI, T-Ports and other consulting engineers to complete the civil design to the client’s and authorities’ requirements.

MLEI undertook the design and prepare documentation for a new Haul Road to service the new Ambrosia open-cut pit. The works were part of the upgrade to Iluka’s Jacinth-Ambrosia operation located approximately 300mm North West of Ceduna, SA.
The new haul road was designed to service mine specification dump trucks, and was designed to comply with strict environmental requirements to comply with Iluka’s mining license requirements. The contract works included a number of site visits through the design and construction phase.
MLEI collaborated with Iluka’s Project, Operations and Environmental divisions to complete the contract works to the client’s requirements and in line with Iluka mine management requirements. The project was delivered on time and budget.

The weighbridge was completely enclosed with a second storey plant area for the dosing equipment which was also enclosed. The weighbridge was built directly alongside 2 existing weighbridges, and airslides were incorporated to utilise 4 existing product day bins.

MLEI partnered with Darengineer to complete the civil and structural engineering design for the $95M development to Liebherr’s Adelaide facility and a $14M extension to their facility at Mount Thorley, NSW. The projects included multi-storey office buildings, substantial warehouses, cranes, industrial pavements and large civil works including stormwater treatment facilities.

The structural engineering consisted of providing highly technical solutions with a collaborative approach with the client to ensure the sensitive operation of their production work would be achieved. The major structural design elements include steel framing, precast panels, post-tensioning slabs and Bondek slabs.

SA Facility:

WSUD was the main driver of the civil engineering design. Bio-retention swales have been included to the staff parking areas. A large grassed dry land swale was included along the western boundary of the site before discharging in an open cut detention pond. The flows are then restricted before discharging into Main North Road. Further water in other sealed areas are drained through gross pollutant traps before being discharged into the Council stormwater system.

NSW Facility:

The Mount Thorley site was driven by providing treatment to the stormwater before being discharged into a natural water course. Underground treatment systems are utilised before the water is discharged into a rock gabion detention pond. Through utilising eWater Music, MLEI demonstrated that the efficiency of the overall system in reducing the pollutant levels in the stormwater.

MLEI undertook the structural design for a 910m2 freezer store extension to a food processing, packaging, storage & distribution facility. This doubled their existing high bay freezer storage, with all processing and storage refrigeration plant served by a central ammonia refrigeration plant.

The new freezer was directly adjacent to the existing freezer, with the new room cooling load added to the existing central refrigeration plant. The required coolers, pipework, valving and controls were added to achieve required capacity and level of automation.

MLEI were engaged to complete the civil and structural engineering for the new $14M Jurlique International office, production facility and warehouse located in Mount Barker.

The production facility included all the equipment and process to produce cosmetics. The design was undertaken within the requirements of TGA and included mixing rooms, testing rooms, laboratories, chemical storage and packaging.

The structural engineering included the design of footings, retaining walls, concrete slab, concrete ramps, the steel roof framing and canopies and the design of precast panels. MLEI were involved in finalising the site works including pavements and developing a stormwater drainage plan. We also prepared civil/structural drawings and relevant technical specifications for tender and construction purposes.

MLEI undertook the civil and structural design of this custom-built industrial warehouse. This project required 700 tonnes of structural steel to construct this 22,000 m3 state-of-the-art facility featuring over 21,160 m3 warehouse space. As the warehouse was to be used by a steel fabricator with significant loads on the ground slab, MLEI provided guidance on the allowable loads on the slab when stacking steel members. The warehouse was designed with crane beams to support 3x no. 4.5 tonne gantry cranes in each bay.

The project included a 820m3 office space designed by our close colleagues at Ginos Consulting Engineers with heavy duty hardstand, full drive-around truck access and on-grade roller door access for undercover loading.

The project construction had to be conducted within tight parameters as the site was adjacent to Edinburgh Airport and the rear of the warehouse was under its flight path. MLEI worked closely with the project team to allow comply with the strict regulations.

MLEI undertook the structural engineering design for BlueScope's new headquarters in Adelaide. This included a new manufacturing facility and a 2-storey administration office.

MLEI provided the following services:

• 50,000 m2 site with a 20,000 m2 manufacturing facility with cantilever canopy and propped canopy
• Over 10 no. 6.3-tonne gantry cranes
• 2-storey administration office
• Staff amenities of 400 m2
• Driver amenities of 100 m2
• External concrete hardstand of 23,000 m2
• Sprinkler tank and pumphouse slabs.

As this facility is to be used to manufacture Lysaght and Fielders products, the design needed to fit around the manufacturing equipment, with 20-metre clear spans between columns. There were over 600 tonnes of structural steel, purlins and girts.
The project was delivered in 18 months to-schedule, from Design through to Handover.

The heritage-listed 1881 Nowra Bridge crossing the Shoalhaven River is the unofficial gateway to the South Coast. The Nowra Bridge project provides a new four-lane bridge over the Shoalhaven River, upgraded intersections and additional lanes on the Princes Highway. Following the new bridge opening, the old bridge will be repurposed for future community use.
Major work commenced in mid-2020, leading to the recent opening of the new bridge. Concurrently, planning for the repurposing of the historic Nowra Bridge is ongoing. MLEI Bridge is actively involved in this phase, focusing on the planning, strategic options, and the Statement of Heritage Impact (SOHI) related to repurposing the historic structure.

The Wybong Creek New Bridge project in NSW was successfully completed in 2021. This project was a culmination of combining sustainable structural design practice through re-use and justification of existing structure and practical design. From detailed analysis of existing foundations to full earthquake building upgrade, the project required careful review of all elements.

RUNDLE MALL PLAZA

MLEI undertook the structural engineering for the major refurbishment of this history building in Rundle Mall. The 1950s building which previously had anchor tenants such as David Jones, Harris Scarfe and Spotlight, and now H&M.

Although a full earthquake review was undertaken of the existing steel sway framed structure, we achieved a solution that met the functional brief without requiring earthquake upgrades. Challenges experience during construction including working around a large amount of asbestos in the building and a strict deadline due to the 2018 Christmas opening date.

The project included:

  • New façade to the south and east elevations to L3
  • New entrance including triple floor void and moving of The Spirit sculpture
  • New food court including partial removal of L2 floor to provide a double-storey space
  • 3 new escalators, new lift and shaft
  • Updated canopy including new glass entrance canopy.

THE BEND MOTORSPORT PARK

MLEI were responsible for the structural and civil engineering for the Pit Building and Hotel at the brand-new sports motor park at Tailem Bend. Coming in at 308m long, the building boasted garages for 34 racing vehicles, corporate viewing areas, restaurants, bars, race timing facilities, members lounge and a 40-bed hotel over 2 levels. The project was delivered under a strict budget and timeframe.

The building was designed with repetition, simplicity, and economy in mind. The suspended floors were concrete on metal deck with composite steel beams. Precast walls were used extensively on most of the facades as well as between garages and hotel rooms. The building has 7 fire escape stairs, 3 lifts, balcony viewing areas, extensive roof mounted plant and 2 full building movement joints.

MLEI have also been involved with the wider project including purpose designed “Mancaves” for the storage of personal cars, Stadium Circuit Building for go-karting and drift racing, 4WD building for a purpose made 4WD track and many more items.

MONARTO SAFARI PARK VISITOR CENTRE

MLEI undertook the structural and civil engineering for the new Monarto Safari Park Zoo visitor centre. The new visitors centre replaced the existing facility and was located in a completely new location off Monarto Road to the north of the Zoo site.

The design included:

  • Visitors centre complete with entry, ticketing, staff office, shop, café, restaurant, stores, and lookout
  • 1,500 carpark including buses, motorhomes
  • Drop off, service yards
  • External amphitheatre with play equipment
  • Drainage basin
  • Extensive landscaping.

The visitors centre had a unique shape and used a variety of construction materials including rammed earth walls, blockwork, lightweight facades using Corten steel.

Mark has extensive expertise in undertaking and managing complex designs, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation and demolition of road and rail bridges.

Mark’s experience covers all aspects of bridge management, from inspection, assessment, evaluations, load testing, risk and feasibility studies, constructability reviews and cost estimates. He has a specialist interest in heritage bridges, fatigue, innovative, practical solutions, and emergency and brownfield bridge works.

Mark is well known in the industry, playing a critical part in several projects receiving Engineering Excellence Awards and two Colin Crisp Awards. These projects include Duffs and Marlee, Swansea, Dunmore and Hinton Bridges, and Movable Span Study.

Most notably, Nicholas established MLEI Consulting Engineers in 2007 and was Managing Director for over 16.5 years, during which time he grew the company into a workforce of over 125 staff across South Australia, Victoria, the Northern Territory, New South Wales, and Queensland. Recently in 2023, he stepped up to the position of Executive Chair of the Board, with a vision for further growth.
