The existing arch maintenance units (AMU) were upgraded in 1997 and no longer provided suitable and safe access to the arch of the bridge.

A comprehensive access system was required to provide safe and reliable access to all parts of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for maintenance and painting. To comply with heritage requirements, the system had to be deployed without cutting or drilling anywhere on the bridge’s steelwork structure and the large-scale AMU had to weigh less than 71 tonnes.

This project required a complex, one-of-a-kind solution to enable safe maintenance and longevity for this iconic structure. Further constraints included strict heritage requirements and the need to keep the overall weight of each AMU to less than 71 tonnes.
