JOHN FOORD BRIDGE CMP AND REHABILITATION

The 1892 John Foord Bridge, a state-heritage listed structure crossing the Murray River, required significant upgrades to address structural issues and meet modern safety standards. The core challenge was extending its operational life while preserving its unique heritage values.
As lead heritage and structural engineering consultant, MLEI guided the rehabilitation with an integrated, conservation-led approach.
MLEI provided the following services:
- Conservation Management Plan (CMP) – developed the definitive CMP to create a policy framework for all future conservation and repair
- Structural Assessment & Rehabilitation Design – performed detailed analysis of the historic wrought iron trusses and designing targeted upgrades for the trusses and traffic barriers.
- Configuration & Approach Design – assessed optimal bridge configuration and designing new, visually sympathetic approaches.
